Celebrating 50 years of live theatre It is 50 years since Preston Drama Club opened The Playhouse Theatre in Market Street West, Preston with a production of Sean O'Casey's play "Juno & the Paycock". The 50th anniversary was celebrated in September 1999 by a repeat production. The Club raised the funds necessary without grant aid of any kind to buy what was then The Columba Hall & convert it into the warm & friendly little theatre it is now. The conversion work was carried out by all the members resulting in a fully equipped theatre with stage lifts, lighting, fixed upholstered tip-up seating, dressing rooms, workshop, licensed bar & all other necessary facilities. Since then a newly equipped lighting/effects balcony, additional workshop, wardrobe storage areas & a purpose built additional rehearsal room have been added, the licensed bar has been enlarged & refurbished, new toilets & dressing rooms have been created and the Foyer has been modernized with the addition of a purpose built Information Kiosk. We have commenced a programme to re-upholster all our seating in the auditorium In the 1998-99 season, it was used by no less than seven amateur groups to provide 18 productions, which must surely justify the hopes & convictions of those past members of Preston's artistic community. The whole theatre or individual rehearsal/public rooms are available for hire not only for dramatic & musical productions, but also for conferences, demonstrations, private & public meetings etc. Please contact us for details. We would like to extend a warm welcome to all those who have not visited us before & thank all our patrons who have enjoyed our previous productions. Back |
