BRIEF ENCOUNTER RETURNS
A play in 2 acts
Act 1 – STILL LIFE by Noel Coward
Act 2 – STILL LIFE GOES ON by George Mackin
Directed by Jane Rawkins
Still Life is the play upon which the renowned film “Brief Encounter’ was based . It is 1936 and the action takes place in the station refreshment room where Myrtle Bagot rules the roost. Laura asks for her help when she gets soot in her eye from a passing train and as luck would have it a doctor is sitting at a nearby table. A friendship is formed and weekly meetings in the cafe ensue, but does love or respectability win the day?
It is now 1965 and Still Life Goes On throws Laura and Alec (now a hospital consultant) together again under very different circumstances. We are in the hospital canteen where relationships echo those of the previous play, but the dramatis personae, although connected, differ greatly. Wheels are within wheels and fate plays its hand.
