Hobson’s Choice
by Harold Brighouse
Directed by Christine Odlum
To celebrate Broughton Players’ 80th anniversary, we are proud to present this timeless classic Lancashire comedy.
In 1880’s Salford, bombastic boot-shop owner Henry Hobson’s attempts to rule over his independent minded daughters doesn’t quite go to plan – and when his ‘plain’ but very astute eldest daughter, Maggie becomes intent on marrying long-suffering boot-maker Willie Mossop, Hobson’s future looks uncertain.
However, it is hapless Willie who triumphs in this unlikely love story, as newfound fortitude deals a resolution that is – Hobson’s Choice.
The play explores themes of social class, family dynamics, and women’s independence as Maggie seeks to assert her will against her father’s outdated views and strives to forge her own path in life.
