Lend Me A Tenor
by Ken Ludwig
Directed by Phil Tomlinson
Ken Ludwig’s Lend Me A Tenor is one of the most celebrated farces ever written—a riotous, fast-paced comedy that has been delighting audiences around the world for decades.
Set in 1930s Cleveland, the play follows the chaotic events surrounding the arrival of world-famous opera star Tito Merelli, whose highly anticipated performance threatens to collapse in spectacular fashion. What follows is a whirlwind of mistaken identities, romantic entanglements, slamming doors, outrageous misunderstandings and non-stop laughter.
Widely regarded as a modern comic masterpiece, Lend Me A Tenor combines razor-sharp dialogue with impeccable comic timing. Ludwig’s brilliantly constructed plot keeps audiences on the edge of their seats as one hilarious complication leads to another. The play demands energy, precision and flair from its cast, rewarding audiences with an evening of pure theatrical joy
Since its West End premiere in 1986 and its Broadway success in 1989, Lend Me A Tenor has become a favourite of professional and amateur theatre companies alike. The production earned multiple Tony Award nominations and has been translated and performed across the globe, cementing its reputation as one of the great comedies of the modern stage.
Critics were quick to recognise its brilliance. One of the most famous original reviews came from The New York Times, which described Lend Me A Tenor as “one of the two great farces by a living writer.” The praise reflected what audiences were already discovering: a play that combines the elegance of classic farce with a fresh, contemporary sense of fun.
Packed with larger-than-life characters, operatic glamour and laugh-out-loud situations, Lend Me A Tenor remains a guaranteed crowd-pleaser. Whether you are a seasoned theatre-goer or new to live performance, this sparkling comedy offers an unforgettable night of entertainment. If you love clever comedy, impeccable farce and theatre at its most exhilarating, Lend Me A Tenor is not to be missed.
